Michael Bussey

Senior Consultant

Michael Bussey comes to Donor By Design following a terrific YMCA career spanning nearly four decades.  The foundation of Mike’s Y work is rooted in many summers as a camp counselor, experiencing first-hand the impact that YMCA camping has on kids.  It was then he knew that he needed to dedicate his career to a mission-driven nonprofit that truly makes a difference.

Mike spent his first 17 years with the YMCA of Greater St. Paul where he last served as Vice President for Operations and Financial Development.  Following a two-year YMCA World Service commitment with the YMCA in Nazareth, Israel, Mike served as the Director General of the Jerusalem International YMCA (JIY).  During his tenure, Mike secured the two largest gifts ever received by the JIY and the YMCA was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize for its historic work in creating peaceful coexistence in the Middle East.

From 2000-2010, Mike served as the YMCA of the USA’s Financial Development Consultant to over 350 YMCAs in 14 Midwest states and to the JIY.  His direct consultation approach inspires and empowers volunteers and staff to lead their own development efforts long after he is gone. His passion and enthusiasm is grounded in his belief that the long-term, secure future of an organization is directly related to philanthropic support.

Mike provides counsel for:

  • Endowment Development
  • Capital Campaign Feasibility and Execution
  • Campaign Case Development
  • Annual Campaign Assessment and Development
  • Development Staff Coaching
  • Board and Volunteer Development
  • Camps and International Development

Mike has served on the NAYDO Council (North American YMCA Development Organization), as the National Chairman for YMCA World Camp ’88 and as coordinator of the annual YMCA Camping Symposium on Financial Development.  He has been a keynote speaker at numerous YMCA conferences and annual meetings, as well as at the 1991 YMCA World Council in Seoul, Korea.
